The exhibition is centred by a suspended replica, constructed at 70% scale, of the arched belvedere of the Empire Hotel, built in 1901 (the year of Australian Federation), in the mining town of Queenstown, Lutruwita/Tasmania. Variously dream, memory, promise or ruin, this copper tube outline of a Belvedere Ghost haunts the space, forming a receptacle for adaptive imagination, and a frame for viewing immersive imagery of the surrounding environment.
Anthony Coupe and Emily Paech design the Belvedere Ghost prototype in January 2023.
